Rock Week

I'm getting lazy about blogging again, as the summer wears on. So little time left, really, and so many things to do. It felt good to turn the calendar over to August today -- late July is such a desultory time -- but August is packed scarily full of activities, not to mention school starting, for both the boos and me. I have to remember that I don't have the energy I once did. I mustn't schedule too many activities. I run out of gas easily, with no way to refuel except a night's sleep.

This past week, boos were in a camp about rocks (thus the week's theme). Every afternoon they went on a field trip in a little white van to look at interesting rocks in the Boulder area. I signed them up for the camp because Rocket Boy likes rocks and I want the boos to like them too. When they first heard about the camp, they were not pleased, but after the first day that all changed. Both of them want to take it next year too, and now we have all these newly-collected rocks sitting around the house and porch. That's their 3rd and last camp of the summer: #1 was Lego camp and #2 was Chess camp. They loved Lego camp, Chess camp not so much but they did learn how to play chess, and Rock camp rules.

The week brought some good rain, after several very dry weeks -- we got about 2 inches in a 24-hour period. So wonderful to have a solid new roof!
We have company visiting right now, too -- my niece from Los Angeles and her eight-year-old son, who the boos adore. They're not actually staying with us, since we don't have guest quarters -- they're in a hotel a few miles down the road. But they come and hang out with us every day, eat lunch and dinner. I love having company in the summer, when we can hang out on the porch or in the park.

Tomorrow we're all going to a birthday party together, a swim party, and then in the afternoon we might play miniature golf. Sunday we're planning a hike and another swim. And biking, biking, biking -- my niece rented a bike for her son, and we've been riding all over town. My whole body aches.
Tomorrow night we might bike to an ice cream place, but tonight we just ate the fresh fruit crisp I made (with peaches, blueberries, and raspberries). Summer desserts have a tendency to cancel out the calories burned by summer activities. A more positive way to say that might be: summer activities make it possible to eat summer desserts without gaining a lot of weight. Better, no?

Fun times. Summer in Boulder.
